Lisa Athwal, M.D.

I am excited to join Monmouth Eye Care as a general ophthalmologist. My areas of interest include management of glaucoma, diabetic eye disease, macular degeneration, dry eye, and cataracts.

Lifelong Passion for Eye Care

I grew up in Toms River and have always loved the Jersey Shore. My father and uncle are both ophthalmologists so I believe that this career is in my blood. I remember watching videos of cataract surgeries with my father when I was a little girl and being fascinated. After my freshman year of college, I worked as an ophthalmic technician and my desire to enter the medical field solidified. I loved interacting with patients and being able to play a role in improving vision.

After graduating from Bryn Mawr College with honors, I had the opportunity to volunteer with Himalayan Healthcare. After six months of collecting donated eyeglasses and helping to raise money to purchase ophthalmic equipment for the Ilam Health Clinic, I traveled to Nepal where I assisted with eye exams, fitting glasses, and setting up the first eye care facility in the remote village of Ilam.

Medical and Surgical Training

As a medical student at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School I participated in Student Sight Savers, an organization dedicated to providing free eye screenings and eye health education to the Newark community. I also participated in ophthalmology research and presented my work at national meetings, as well as coauthoring a research paper that was published in a scientific journal.

After graduating from medical school in 2012, I completed my internship in internal medicine and then my residency in ophthalmology at Rutgers New Jersey Medical School. During my training I rotated at the University Hospital in Newark, the East Orange VA Hospital, and Jersey City Medical Center. This experience allowed me to treat a diverse group of patients with a wide range of eye pathologies. Because University Hospital is a Level I trauma center, I did a large volume of emergency surgical interventions for cases of severe eye trauma during my residency. As a surgeon I have also performed many cataract and glaucoma surgeries, retinal and glaucoma lasers, and injections for macular degeneration and diabetic eye disease, in addition to corneal and oculoplastic procedures.

Joining Monmouth Eye Care

In medical school I met my husband who is a surgeon specializing in minimally invasive and bariatric surgery. Although he is from Missouri, I am happy that he agreed to settle in New Jersey, close to my family and the beach! I joined Monmouth Eye Care in September 2016. I am accepting new patients and hope that you will come in to see everything that our office has to offer.
